The Comfort of Hearty Food...A New Kairos in the works...and a reflection about Fear...

What's up Kairos Fans,

It has been a very up and down week for us here at Kairos because of the Weather and all the changes that go with that. It was good to have an unexpected day off though and to be able to watch it snow. I haven't seen weather like that since I was a kid... Friday was a blast here though and we seemed to be getting back to normal by the end of the week.

I decided to run the same Specials again next week since we didn't get to make a whole lot of Chicken Alfredo last week. One thing that did seem to go over well was the Cream of Potato Soup and the Luscious Lemon Cupcakes...I could eat those every day! A friend of mine referred to them as "Baby Angels" at a meeting last week so I take that as a compliment. I hope you guys continue to enjoy them.

For some time now I have known that it was neccesary for us to take the next step and open a Kairos Kafe in one of the communities surrounding Birmingham. Actually, its not really as much of an idea as it is a demand from the folks that support or want to support Kairos Kafe.

One of the most frustrating comments that I get from people is "Hey, you're that guy from Kairos! We've been wanting to eat there but you are never open when I'm off work..." or "It's just too far to come all the way back downtown once I am home..."

For me, when I get frustrated with the way that things actually ARE, then that's a catalyst for me to change the status quo. I have been doing a lot of praying and soul searching over the past few months, and I've been asking God to give me a red hot burning Vision for 2011...

Its funny how at times like these God will ask me "What do you really want?" Many times I am tempted to come back with a religious sounding answer like "More Peace and Joy" or "To cure World Hunger", etc. But when He asks me something like that I know that He already has something up His sleeve so I might as well get real and be totally honest.

What do I want? I desire to see a Kairos Kafe in every community in the Birmingham Area...I want to write a Cookbook that taps into the passion that I have for food and teaches others how easy it is to rock and roll in the kitchen...I desire to use employment at Kairos Kafe as a vehicle for helping people that are starting their lives over...and I want to help people who are both in prison and coming out of prison learn how to lead successful lives and achieve their dreams...

To me that seems like a tall order to fill, but to God it seems as if He just smiles and says "You want to do all that because those are the desires that I have placed in your heart..." Wow!

This week I had an awesome meeting with the Board of Kairos Katering, Inc. It is amazing to me how much that you can get accomplished when you are in a group of people who are committed to the same goal. In just a few hours I received both encouragement and confirmation to put action to my dreams. It amazes me to think how neccessary it is to include others in what I want to accomplish. Without that community of people, I know that my dreams would remain as fantasies and just go up in a puff of smoke.

Why? Because when it's just me and Jesus without anybody else, it is so easy to allow fear to paralyze me and stop me from taking the neccessary steps needed to reach the goals. I would also appreciate input from you guys and I would like to include you in this process. Right now I have my sights set on Hoover or Gardendale but nothing set in stone yet. We could do both!

May we all be a people who step out and follow our Dreams regardless of the fear that steps in and tries to stop us.

God Bless You, Thank You for supporting Kairos, and have an incredible week!

  3. My wife told me to check you out. Hueytown, 32 in Alabamas top populated cities, and it is a town. No major restaraunt chain but fast food, empty retails everywhere and minutes from the foundry, (recovering people like you mentioned above)15,000 people. However, as a Pastor, in Hueytown, I love to fool with cars, fish, and yes, cook. I also write about it and share it on my blog with my friends who travel birmingham a lot. Brother, I will be seeing you soon at your place. Be blessed, expect the best, and you and I need to hook up, we have a lot in common seems...
