I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you guys at the end of the week. It really makes this business special to me, and I appreciate your feedback, comments, and suggestions.
Last Saturday, we had the opportunity to share with the former residents of this building, Mr. Ollie McClung Jr., his family, and his staff. Mr. Ollie was celebrating his 70th Birthday and he wanted to do it here in the building that he and his family occupied for decades. His sons made his famous barbecue, and Kairos did the rest (Sweet Tea, Cole Slaw, Potato Salad and all the fixin’s)
It was a special time for my staff and I, and we also got to taste his BBQ that we’ve heard so much about... by the time I moved to Birmingham, Ollie’s wasn’t here anymore, so I never actually ate here. I have to say it was some of the best I’ve ever had, and I come from a small town where there is a BBQ spot on every corner.
My best moment of the day (besides meeting Mr. Ollie’s Family and former customers) was meeting a beautiful lady who appeared to be in her 70’s. She commented that it would be nice to go in the back, so I offered to give her the grand tour of Kairos and Grace & Truth. She said she was the dishwasher for over 30 years.
Imagine her surprise when she saw that what was her former Dishroom was now my kitchen! She had a pleasant response as she pointed out to me where she worked, and where the others worked. She loved what we did with the Church and told me several times that God was truly blessing us greatly. She really made my day!
It was an honor also to hear the old customer’s remark at how beautiful the Kafe and the Church looked. That really made me smile, because we have worked on this building for years. All in all it was a great day, and in a small way it seemed as if Mr. Ollie was passing the torch to me in this hectic business that he understands very well.
The Chicken Busbee that we ran on special last week was a winner! I have gotten many rave reviews and one very special phone call from one of my customers (and a dear friend) Patti Boomershine. She wanted me to know that she approved of the Chicken Busbee and that it was now one of her top favorites! I first met her in 2006 when I signed up with the Birmingham Better Business Bureau. She became one of my first regular customers, and has since added a weekly Bible Study/Lunch Group that meets in here once a week. We have truly built a relationship around food!
I’m running that on Special again next week, and if you guys keep loving it, I’ll add it to the menu.
The Fish is pan seared Atlantic Salmon with a Honeymustard Glaze. It’s one of my favorite recipes. The Veggie is Corn Kobbler, a trio of corn in a creamy sauce topped with a savory crust...
The soup is Cream of Potato (back by popular demand) and the dessert special is Tonya’s Blueberry Delight. This is a favorite recipe that I got from our Dining Room Director, Lenora. It also got high marks from the Birmingham News when they reviewed Kairos a while back.
I will have the Mother's Day Menu on the e-mail next week. We are looking forward to a big crowd, so you will want to make your reservations ahead of time.
Thank you for listening to my thoughts and for loving Kairos Kafe! God Bless you and have an Awesome Week!!!!!
